One of the most influential bassists to me was Red Mitchell. So much so, that in 1990, I changed my tuning to 5ths under his guidance. Conventional tuning is in 4ths.
In 1997 Red’s widow, Diane Mitchell, presented me with the first Red Mitchell Memorial Award for “dedication to the challenge of experimentation and the spirit of innovation” - the highest honor of my life. Anyone familiar with Red knows that he and guitarist Jim Hall made several classic recordings.
Christopher Woitach
studied jazz guitar with Jim Hall. Living in the Pacific Northwest, it was my dream come true when Christopher, a master jazz guitarist moved here. While we are not exactly Red and Jim, we locked in immediately.
The choice of tunes shows our similar influences. Bud Powell for straight ahead bop; Cole Porter for jazz standards; and of course no guitarist can resist Django, Pat Martino and Jimi Hendrix!
We really had fun making this CD, and couldn’t have done it without Greg Williamson’s brush work on Bureau Blues and master engineering!
Enjoy!
